ENVIRONMENT

SAP's public stakeholders are interested in what SAP products and innovation can do to help society respond to the challenge of climate change. In response, SAP has developed a portfolio of innovative enterprise management, supply chain, and compliance solutions that are helping companies optimize their global operations and reduce their carbon footprint.

As a software company, SAP's impact on the environment from its own operations is relatively low. But the expectations of our clients and their stakeholder are quite clear: Climate change is a cross-industry issue and all industries must respond to the challenge.

As part of our belief that SAP solutions help companies better manage their ecological impact, we show our commitment through participation in the following initiatives:

3C-Combat Climate Change initiative

3C-Combat Climate Change initiative – SAP is one of 49 signatory companies of the 3C Initiative, a global opinion group whose principles and roadmap aim for a low-emitting society. As climate change has become one of the defining issues of our time, we believe that we can play an important role in terms of public policy engagement, not only as a current solution provider enabling resource efficiency and self governance, but also as a leading innovator for future solutions.

Carbon Disclosure Project

Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) – SAP voluntarily reports its known carbon footprint to the Carbon Disclosure Project. The CDP is an independent, not-for-profit organization that aims to provide quality information and data to facilitate dialogue between corporations and shareholders from which a rational response to climate change can emerge.

Caring for Climate

"Caring for Climate" – SAP is a signatory of the UN Global Compact's statement "Caring for Climate," pledging action alongside other major corporations to reduce environmental impact and stimulate the development of effective public policy, innovation, and market-based incentives.

Through environmental initiatives on site at our campuses worldwide and participation in programs that make transparent our energy use, SAP aims to reduce its environmental impact each day. Such programs and initiatives include:

  • sGreen – This corporate internal campaign aims to reduce SAP's ecological footprint at our facilities worldwide through comprehensive measurement of water, waste, energy, emissions; targeted reductions; awareness and engagement of employees and suppliers; and public policy engagement and advocacy.
Regional initiatives:
  • North America and Latin America
    • The expansion at our Newtown Square, PA, headquarters is a facility with the highest level of certification that the United States Green Council Building awards. Our new LEED Platinum building will feature numerous energy efficiency standards.
    • Our new building in Palo Alto, CA, is built to LEED Certified standards, utilizing high energy efficiency ration building and construction materials, systems, and appliances.
    • The global service center in São Leopoldo, Brazil, is being built according to LEED gold level standards – the first of its kind in Brazil.

  • Europe, Middle East and Africa
    • At our German headquarters, solar panels installed on site generate enough electricity to power the equivalent of 60 households.
    • Inside the facility, energy-saving lamps, printers, and copiers, along with environmentally-friendly hardware and sensor-controlled lights, to conserve energy throughout the workday. Additionally, in warmer weather, a passive cooling system keeps the head office campus building cool without the energy drain of an air-conditioning system.
    • SAP Labs Israel has formed a committee to collect and prioritize suggestions for green initiatives from employees. With the help of external consultants, the committee is working to implement employee's ideas, including increased recycling and decreased electricity use.

  • Asia Pacific Japan
    • The SAP Labs campus in India is pursuing LEED certification with buildings with intelligent lighting aligned to minimize air conditioning and waste water recycling.
    • SAP employees in Singapore are actively working towards achieving Eco-Office Certification in 2008 from the Singapore Environment Council, which entails measures such as substantially reducing consumption and increasing employee participation in "green" activities including recycling.
